Foot Corns
Think of a corn as ingrowing hard skin. They're a plug of solid callus that sits on your nerves.
Corns are mostly straw-yellow in color and form due to pressure and friction.
(They can vary in color as you can see in these pictures of corns).
In other words, how hard and often your foot hits the floor. This is magnified by the shoes you wear.
Corns are easily confused with warts/verrucas, but there are differences.

Foot Corn Symptoms
The main corn symptom is pain. How bad this gets depends on:
Corns appear on your soles and on your toes.
- How long it's been there
- Where it's located
- How active you are

Causes of Foot Corns
As a Podiatrist, I'm going to mention shoes! They don't have to be bad fitting either; sometimes it's just a rigid sole.
Some people's toes naturally position under each other which makes even comfortable shoes produce pressure.
In the case of seed corns, it's often a lack of moisture, in other words dry feet.

Corn Types
Hard corns: The most common form, hard corns can be difficult to see as they often appear on the sole.
Soft corns: Any corn between your toes are soft corns. The creases of the skin here produces moisture which makes them pale and painful.
Seed corns: These usually appear as a collection on the sole or balls of the foot. Seed corns are the most responsive to home treatment.
Smokers Corns: A very painful and distinct type of corn. These grow back much faster than normal and have a distinctive pale appearance.
Lister Corns: These are actually a permanent split little toenail.
While they're made worse by shoes, toes that rotate outwards is the main cause.

Prevention and Treatment
Not all corns hurt everyone who has them, yet sometimes the tiniest ones gives great discomfort.
In their early stages, some can be cured with filing and the right foot moisturiser. Some respond well to corn pads, too.
When they develop, they usually need skilled removal which is painless and offers almost instant relief.
